Wegovy for Weight Loss: Injections, Tablets and Medical Supervision
Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Current FDA labeling includes once-weekly injection and once-daily tablet formulations for eligible adults, with formulation-specific indications and administration instructions.

What patients should know
What Wegovy is
Wegovy is used with a reduced-calorie eating pattern and increased physical activity to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction long term in eligible patients. The injection also has additional labeled populations and indications; the exact product and indication must be confirmed before prescribing.
Injection versus tablet
The injection is administered weekly. The tablet is taken daily using precise fasting, water and waiting instructions. They are not interchangeable dose-for-dose, and selection should consider adherence, gastrointestinal tolerance, medical history, coverage and preference.
Dosing and expectations
Treatment uses product-specific escalation to reduce gastrointestinal adverse effects. Trial averages cannot predict an individual result, and higher or faster dosing is not automatically better.
Who may be evaluated
- A complete review of weight history, previous treatment and current goals
- Screening of blood pressure, medical conditions, pregnancy plans and medication interactions
- Discussion of expected benefit, side effects, insurance coverage, availability and cost
- Follow-up to assess response, tolerability, nutrition, sleep and long-term maintenance
Meeting general criteria does not mean a medication is safe or covered. The clinician applies the current product label and individual medical judgment.
Important safety considerations
- Do not combine Wegovy with another semaglutide product or another GLP-1 receptor agonist.
- The label carries a boxed warning concerning thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents and contraindicates use with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2.
- Important risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, dehydration-related kidney injury, severe gastrointestinal reactions and other formulation-specific warnings.
- Weight-loss treatment is not used during pregnancy; discuss pregnancy planning in advance.
Emergency warning: Seek urgent care for severe allergic symptoms, chest pain, fainting, severe or persistent abdominal pain, inability to keep fluids down, signs of dehydration, or other potentially serious symptoms.
